This leaves many prospective car buyers grappling with the decision between the two fuel options, especially considering the wide array of vehicles available with both options.

Opinions are divided, with some advocating for the superiority of petrol cars, while others argue that diesel vehicles offer more power. This dilemma underscores the complexity of choosing the right type of fuel-powered vehicle in the current automotive landscape.

Many automotive experts suggest that if your daily commute ranges from 50 to 60 kilometers, approximately totaling 1500 kilometers per month, a petrol car would be more suitable. Conversely, if your daily mileage falls between 70 to 100 kilometers, totaling around 3000 kilometers monthly, a diesel car is recommended.

According to these experts, diesel cars generally entail higher maintenance costs compared to petrol cars and have a shorter lifespan of approximately five years. Consequently, diesel vehicles older than 10 years are prohibited in the capital city of Delhi, while petrol cars have a 15-year limit.

Despite advancements, petrol cars now offer similar fuel efficiency to diesel vehicles, albeit with a slight difference of 4 to 5 kilometers per liter.

Diesel engine cars typically achieve higher fuel efficiency compared to petrol cars. This is attributed to the fact that diesel contains more energy than petrol. Diesel fuel is less volatile than petrol and has a higher combustion capacity, resulting in a longer burning duration within the engine. Consequently, diesel-powered vehicles consume less fuel, thereby achieving a higher fuel efficiency rating.

Diesel engines are renowned for their superior efficiency and longer lifespan compared to petrol engines. However, these advantages come at a higher cost. Petrol engines, on the other hand, are quieter and produce less pollution. They require less maintenance, whereas diesel engines, with their larger size, higher capacity, and more components, contribute more to pollution and necessitate more expensive maintenance due to their complex nature.

Another consideration is the significantly higher price tag of diesel cars compared to petrol cars. Taking the Hyundai Venue as an example, the ex-showroom price of the petrol S model is Rs 8.90 lakh, whereas the diesel S Plus model of Venue is priced at Rs 10.40 lakh. This price difference amounts to approximately Rs 1.5 lakh for the Venue, but it may vary for other vehicles. To justify this extra expense of Rs 1.5 lakh, one would need to drive a diesel car for a considerable number of years.
