Following the launch of ChatGPT-4o by OpenAI, Google swiftly unveiled its own AI tool, demonstrating a competitive stance in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. The timing of Google’s release, occurring just one day after the debut of ChatGPT-4o, suggests a strategic move to position its offering as a formidable rival.

This competitive dynamic is underscored by Google’s emphasis on developing a tool capable of rivaling ChatGPT-4o’s capabilities, evoking an “anything you can do, I can do better” sentiment. Prior to OpenAI’s announcement, Google had already teased the prowess of its mobile-based systems, further accentuating the competitive undertones of this technological rivalry.

In addition to aiding individuals in their daily activities, this AI tool encompasses a noteworthy scam-detection feature known as Gemini Nano. This capability enables the tool to analyze phone calls in real time, identifying potential scams without necessitating the transmission of call information beyond the confines of the device.

These advancements in AI functionality were unveiled during Google I/O, the company’s annual showcase event for software developers, highlighting the tool’s multifaceted utility beyond conventional assistance tasks.

Speakers such as Sir Demis Hassabis, the head of Google Deepmind, repeatedly stressed the firm’s long-running interest in multimodal AI and emphasized that its models were “natively” able to handle images, video, and sounds and draw connections between them. He showcased the project Astra which is exploring the future of AI assistants.

In a demo video of its capabilities, it was able to answer spoken questions about what it was seeing through a phone camera. At the end of the demo, a Google employee asked the virtual assistant where they had left their specs, to which it replied that it had just seen them on a nearby desk.

Furthermore, the team presented a glimpse into the future with a demonstration of a prototype system designed to generate a virtual “team-mate.” This virtual assistant could be instructed to execute specific tasks, such as simultaneously participating in multiple online meetings. This showcase underscores the potential for AI technology to evolve beyond its current capabilities, offering enhanced support and efficiency in various professional contexts.
